You wish to apply the word "arbitrary"--but where and when to station troops is not arbitrary. We have troops all over the world. Every circumstance and case is unique and is evaluated by Government and military on a unique basis. That is no different from the U.S. participation and non participation in struggles and conflicts around the globe. Just because we are allies does NOT mean it is inappropriate to participate in different arenas of action.
Thank you for justifying my use of the term "arbitrary".
Your country showed NO HESITATION in getting involved in 2 wars which involved Britain but where Canada was not attacked and had no obvious interest- -WW1 and WW2. We were tricked into WW1 by a lying Democratic Preisdent (he ran on "He kept us out of war!", remember?). We were attacked by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor, then Germany declared war on us in WW2. Why were you in either again?

I pointed out that Canada and the U.S. defend the peace in different bailiwicks at times.
Glad to hear you're in Darfur. You're not? Why not?

I think it is disingenuous of you to narrow that self interest to the physical difference between an 18 year old and a 45 year old.
Cut the crap. 16 year olds on average ARE more physically fit and have more endurance than 45 year olds. You actually intend to argue that? Go to it!

It would be easy to test the qualifications of mature adults just as youth are tested for military qualifications. In this way--those who qualified for military service could be of any age.
Any age? How about 90?
BTW, 18 ISN'T the upper limit for induction in military service down here. 35 is.

And it ain't because I can't kick the ass of most 18 year olds in most anything.
"Most anything" doesn't count. Outdesigning a circuit or program in these matters doesn't count. Marching 20 miles, then taking a machine gun nest does.

But it would be difficult to convince me that my death ought to serve some suit at a dinner party. Don't even try to sell me apple pie.
Funny. You're Mother Country had NO HESITATION to do just that- -worldwide. "The sun never sets on the British Empire", remember? You're the product of those 18-year-old boys they shangaied out of London pubs and woke up at sea on British warships.
