The money is coming out of Alaska's hide in other areas, and in loss of future bridge funding. The money shortfall is so great that I wonder if either bridge will ever be built. Some excerpts from this morning's local paper...

The state estimates the Gravina bridge in Ketchikan will cost $315 million. The group dedicated to building a bridge across Knik Arm from Anchorage says its project may cost $400 million to $600 million, although previous estimates have been higher.

There's an "animosity" toward Alaska because of the bridges, Stevens said. He also said personal attacks on him, and his loss of the chairmanship, are prompting lawmakers to cut spending to the state.

"You see the attacks that are being made on us daily," he told Alaska reporters. "Look at the (Alaska) things that are being reduced in the appropriations bill. Every single appropriations bill has been reduced."
