Orca, the twin towers had a unique construction for a steel frame building, with the structural members making up the skin and the core. From what I've read, the attachment points where the floors connected to the structural skin failed in the heat, causing a chain reaction of floors pancaking onto each other, each floor driving the next, which is also why they came straight down as if demolished.
