Structural steel has half its yield strength at 500-550 C IIRC. Steel can be used uninsulated for small structures, I forget how many stories high. The reason is that they can be evacuated quickly. High rise steel supported structures MUST be fire insulated to meet code. There has been significant work on this since 9/11 BTW.

Oddly enough, one of the methods of fire protecting structural steel is to encase it in solid wood.
