I would like an effective moderate who believes in consensus-building and weighing all sides of an issue before embarking on radical policies. Party affiliation doesn't matter that much to me, as long as they ditch the most ideological fringes (left or right) and give us a period of centrist government again.

I do find it interesting that the Republicans are responding to the drop in support for their ideas with vicious personal attacks, not a debate to convince people their ideas are still the best possible choice. No pretense about trying to unify anyone any longer.

Looks like a bunker mentality punctuated by periodic outbursts.
