The society of the south, however you wish to imagine it, took 100 years to recover. As I read your post. The south was in America. The south was not oppressed. If southern society took 100 years to recover, it speaks to the self determination of southern society. Was slavery such an economic crutch that so pervaded work, manufacturing, life solution space, that losing it made competative work solutions impossible to figure out because of the culture of southern society.

I doubt very much that culture could have been fixed with some economic help from the North. As southern culture becomes northernized is it now prospering?
