I shake my head at myself when I find that I am defending traditional religious values like this.

It's tough to define exactly where the line should be drawn. Take the Pledge of Allegiance, for example. "One nation, under God" is, to me, devoid of meaning, but if it means so much to so many people, then let it be.

As for "and to the Republic, for which it stands", that means a great deal to me, although I'd be willing to bet that 99%+ of the kids who recite that line have no clue as to its original meaning and intent.

One more... "With Liberty and Justice for all" is a wonderful concept, but has never been true and is even less so at present.
