"In fact, we had lost that war by 1968 and had no way of winning"

Are you claiming that the Tet Offensive resulted in our defeat? The Viet Cong were totally eliminated as a force as a result, and all of the conventional PAVN in the South were either eliminated or expelled. The reason we couldn't win had more to do with the political decision that we weren't going to cross over into the North. So they were free to infiltrate men into the South.

Our problem in Iraq is different. If we had been prepared to restore order and rebuild infrastructure in the wake of its collapse, things would have gone much smoother. It still might have fallen apart because the Sunni's still would have tried to foment a civil war, but our troops wouldn't have been targeted nearly as much.
