There's been discussion of price. Here is a shopping basket of books. Method was to buy Amazon 5 best selling hardback fiction, hardback non-fiction, paper-back fiction, paperback non-fiction, last weeks top titles. I then went to other mainstream internet book stores for same books. I did not find all titles/editions at all locations, so I eliminated ones not found everywhere. Here are results:

Hardcover best sellers (9): AMZN = $139.01; Book Stacks = $131.91; BKS = $149.64; WordsWorth = $162.05.

Paperback best sellers (5): AMZN = $37.30; Book Stacks = $30.72; BKS = $39.10; WordsWorth = $44.90.

Last Week's Tops (3): AMZN = $30.67; Book Stacks = $30.67; BKS = $30.67; WordsWorth = $32.29.

Total: AMZN = $206.98; Book Stacks = $193.30; BKS = $219.41; WordsWorth = $239.24.

These results are consistent with what I've found previously. Book Stacks (books.com) is very cheap on best sellers (40% off almost across the board), but elsewhere, they're comparable to AMZN and others. Of course shipping & handling is a factor in a true comparison. I did research on this some time ago and posted it on this board in August. AMZN and BKS were comparable; Book Stacks was dime cheaper per book and WordsWorth was more expensive.

There may be other internet book sellers that should be considered mainstream, but I'm not aware of them. Powells is not. I've also checked via search engines, and outside of those listed above, I find only niche players. Borders, of course, is not on line yet.
