Actually, Murtha did NOT call for "immediate" withdrawal, but rather a scheduled withdrawal. I was the GOP house leadership that orchestrated a vote on immediate withdrawal (it was a Republican sponsored resolution), trying to corner the Dems into a vote they didn't want to cast. Their move to outflank the Dems didn't work very well because the Dems, with a few nutty exceptions like Cynthia McKinney of GA, all voted against the immediate withdrawal resolution.

That said, the uproar over what Rep. Schmidt said was just as disingenuous. She did NOT call Murtha a coward and neither did the marine she was quoting. But what she said DID give the Dems a lot of positive press coverage, so all around, I'd say this backfired for the GOP. In a relatively small way, that is - it'll be forgotten in another day or two.

JMO.
