Intel, Micron Create
Memory Chip Venture

Two U.S. chipmakers, Micron Technology Inc. and Intel Corp., said they would form a joint venture to manufacture NAND flash-memory chips, creating a significant new rival to the Asian companies that dominate the fast-growing industry segment.

Micron and Intel said they will each invest $1.2 billion in cash and assets to the joint venture, dubbed IM Flash Technologies LLC. They also agreed to each add another $1.4 billion to the venture before 2008 if it reaches performance targets.

Apple Computer Inc. said it forged contracts to purchase NAND chips through 2010 from several leading manufacturers, including $500 million from the new Micron-Intel venture. Apple this year became one of the largest buyers of NAND chips, which it uses as the key data-storage component in its iPod Shuffle and iPod nano digital music players.
