Dean lost in Iowa because Kerry came in and made a strong showing at the big Jefferson dinner, or whatever it's called.

Kerry had just been written off by the press, then came in and wildly impressed the crowd with his strength. Kerry blew away Dean and Gephardt. It was actually Gephardt who was the favorite in Iowa, not Dean.

Also, I heard Dean's orange-capped out of state liberal college student brigades didn't go over great with the local Iowans. Kerry's war hero credentials and strong centrist-progressive credentials did. Teddy Kennedy also helped Kerry, making a terrific speech on his behalf. The Clintons were in the background pushing Clark, and not wanting Dean because he would be doomed to lose in a landslide to Bush.
