Of the $797 billion American businesses spent on logistics last year, an estimated $421 billion could have been farmed out to a third party, Mr. Delaney said. But only $25 billion, or about 6 percent, was. Still, that figure is up from $10 billion, or 2.7 percent, in 1992. And Mr. Delaney said it should continue growing, with businesses farming out 10 percent, or $50 billion worth, of their logistics by 2000.
