Typical war coming of age film set in the 1st Iraq war (1990). Story follows a U.S. Marine through Boot Camp, sniper training, the short war (much of the movie is takes place waiting for the war to begin in the sands of Saudi Arabia), and then a few years later.

Frankly, I was disappointed. This movie was a deluge of most every negative stereotype of the military and Marines. I dealt with Marines frequently when I was on active duty, and my date was married to an active duty Marine for several years. For the most part they are professionals, although they do have their share of "characters" and bufoons. Unfortunately, just about every character in the movie was shown as a bufoon. The Marines are crazy - just not the type of crazy portrayed in this movie. We both felt it could have been a great movie, but missed the mark by a long shot. In addition to the lack of realism, it did not establish the character development or "male bonding" that it was obviously striving for.

Struck me as a movie made by liberal Hollywood people set to discourage anyone from enlisting. To be fair, there are some good war movies made by liberal Hollywood people. This was not one of them.
