"People who don't want to or can't follow my method should not mess with guns."

But they will. I think it preferable that people demonstrate safe driving skills before they are given a license. It will make irresponsible people accountable and many will learn to be responsible. We still get rambos on the road but at least it is not bumper cars. I think this does make people safer with cars; and I don't see how it impacts a great deal on personal freedom. There is a safe and an unsafe way to use cars.

"If you give up the freedom to keep and bear arms..."

Why would I do that? If I can't challenge for the gun test through past experience, or If I can't take a 3 day course to qualify myself, then I am just one of those "people who can't behave responsibly" whom you are willing to "remove personal freedom from".

"If I'm not mistaken, some states require NRA training and/or certification (or some other source) before they will issue a permit to carry."

Does that "remove personal freedom" or does that simply identify the incompetent or irresponsible?
