Still, the more Puritan ones viewed Christmas as an artificial holiday, having nothing to do with the Bible, and many viewed Christmas as a British holiday. Congress regularly met on Christmas day, well into the 1800s. It didn't really take off as a major holiday until the Victorian Era.
