There's been some discussion of bird mortality around wind farms on a nature listserv that I belong to. The statistics vary quite a bit depending on where the wind farms are situated. Obviously, those situated along main migratory routes are more of a problem. However, comparatively speaking, wind farms don't come anywhere near being as lethal as some other manmade hazards -- highrise towers are right up there at the top, along with poisoning from spraying of crops, etc... The wind farm issue does require some serious study, but from an ecological point of view, the benefits will probably be found to outweigh the downside -- especially ways can be found to reduce bird mortality.
