CJ, seems like Murtha himself is also backing away from some of his own heated comments. From the NYTimes article you posted:

"I'm hopeful I don't go too far," he said, adding that he "felt bad" last week after bringing up Vice President Dick Cheney's "five deferments" in the Vietnam era.

Of course, he already sparked the fire ... and the tinder was rather dry.
