"You criticize us now for invading Iraq for what you consider just that reason"

I have tried to take a balanced view. I don't like the hatred that is thrown at Americans just because they are big dog. I would like to see your country be respected as I do respect you.

The Big Dog ALWAYS gets nipped at the ankles by the little ones. Americans had better get used to it. The same thing happened to Britain when it was Big Dog. We should know. We were one of its nippers. :-) ("Pulling the lion's tail", it was called here- -a calculated move to get the Irish-American vote. Sound familiar? Florida and Cuba, anyone?)

But your own people are questioning and condemning. It is never good to ignore honest opinions sincerely voiced. There is some truth from both sides and repeating past mistakes gives you the same fallen cake.
We have NEVER had a war that was not opposed by some percentage of our population. In the war of 1812, the northeastern states considered seeding. The American Civil War? Don't even ask!

I'd be willing to bet that every war Britain dragged Canada into was opposed by a significant percentage of Canadians who asked why they should die for John Bull.

Unanimity? If you have unanimity, you don't have a democracy.

"They were still quite capable of fighting"

I didn't say they weren't still capable.

They were still dangerous and capble of at least forcing a negotiated peace too.

The Allies did have an advantage. Hitler was their best general.

"Again, you criticize us for entering Iraq without that."

Again--my opinion is that you might have chosen a better course or perhaps waited for some bricks to fall into place. Nobody knows the future; but it seems that mistakes were made.

Ideally? The US would have waited until a clear attack by Iraq on the US or its forces. Then no one could question its actions. No one deserving of attention, anyway.

Just what the cost of that have been, though? Suppose SH had decided to put a nuke into a leaky freighter and sailed it into New York harbor? Would we even have been able to prove it? Suppose he targeted Quebec City or Toronto? What would Canada do?

Ask for a meeting of the NATO Military Council and drag us in, I'm sure.

"Did no English have a part in making Hitler mighty?"

What I just said...

France too. And Switzerland. And Russia. It's hard to find clean hands.

"FDR FINALLY ended the Great Depression in the US by entering WW2, too. So?"

So what I was referring to was that many Americans, Brits, and Canadians were supportive of Hitler as an ally against Communist expansion. And I mean more than words--$$$$$$$$.

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
We did it with Iraq as the friend against Iran. Look where that led.
We did it again against ths Soviets in Afghanistan. OBL was our thanks.

Maybe the democracies should restrict this sort of thing to each other. I have feeling it would work a lot better.
