Talk to a few military who have been back a year. Done that - I live close to Fort Lewis, they live all around me, go to my kids schools and we socialize all the time. Many can't wait to go back - I actually hear they dislike going to Afghanistan more than Iraq - the crushing poverty gets to them, someone shooting at them is what they're trained for and can shoot back - they're empowered to act. What makes you think they know what they are talking about? Workers on an assembly often are the last to know when a company is going under. I hardly think you are getting an accurate picture of conditions in Iraq.
