If there is any political advantage to be gained from attacking someone who changed their position, the flip-flopping charges will fly thick and fast, often from the highest bully pulpits in the land. Whether that should happen or whether it's right have nothing to do with it nowadays. It has been done before, and it got people elected, so it will be done again and again and again whenever the opportunity arises. Our tidy, mature, semantic interpretations means nothing in the war of the airwaves.
