"How long did the Walkman fairy tale last?"

The Walkman was not a fairy tale! Sony's revenues from the walkman were dwarfed all other revenues. If you knew anything about Sony you wouldn't have made your comment. Walkman sales were peanuts compared to the total audio/video product lines and professional studio equipment as well as storage systems. The walkman was a new kind of product that everyone copied. The majority of walkman-type products now come from China. Sony's revenues were from a broad range of products unlike Apple where most of their revenues and profits are coming from a product line that will no doubt see major competition. The iPod is not a necessity but an expensive discretionary purchase ie a fad.
