Global Warming Again:

Blizzard traps 1,000 on moor
Telegraph (U.K.) ^ | 26/11/2005 | Richard Savill, Duncan Gardham and Michael Fleet

A major military operation was under way last night to rescue more than 1,000 people trapped by snow and ice on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.

About 500 vehicles, including coaches, were stuck on the A30 near to the Jamaica Inn. Royal Marines used tracked personnel carriers to get to the area.

Eight RAF and Royal Navy helicopters ferried people to safety and took those suffering from the cold to hospital. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said that the operation had begun at around 4pm as night fell. Police commandeered four-wheel drive vehicles to evacuate motorists.

The Daphne du Maurier centre at Bolventor was turned into an emergency area and other facilities were set up in Bodmin and Wadebridge, and at the Jamaica Inn.

Traffic on the M74 near Abington in Scotland Michael Colenzo, the inn's manager, said: "Locals say they have known nothing like this since the 1960s. Cars are backed up for miles."

Up to 5 in of snow was reported in the area and visibility was poor. Police said two lorries jackknifed near Bodmin and cars became stuck.

One of the stranded drivers, Wyndham Proctor, said: "People are either running out of fuel or running their batteries down trying to keep warm."

Trevor Cooper, Cornwall's assistant director of education, said that about 1,000 children had been stranded at schools for several hours waiting to be collected by their parents.
