I think last year there were people injured in a Walmart stampede the day after Thanksgiving. Americans love their toys- that's why China owns our ass, and why the US savings rate is now negative (a very disturbing phenomenon). I'm not sure WHY Americans are as immoderate as they are about things, buying what they do not need, and what they really cannot afford. Perhaps it fills some deep void. We seem to be a country on the decline, after all, with India and China countries that are probably on the ascent- maybe all colonial great powers, that have been used to hegemony, turn to a mass of things to comfort them, when their power wanes. Didn't the Victorians do the same thing? They were great hoarders of goods they did not need, too- in those last days of empire. Maybe it's just a symptom of empire cooling.
