Independent = free vote! A growing number of Americans are independent, as many as declare for either party, because we can vote for either party.

As for the veto, I recall several times Clinton used the veto, even "shutting down the government", to shine the light on pork in appropriations bills, which was then removed by embarrassed legislators. Now, we've got "bridges to nowhere" being defended by adamant, shameless pork miesters with absolutely no Presidential leadership at all.
