It's not all sympathy to the grasshoppers, it's also fear. In a world of grasshoppers, the ants stores are not safe (nor is the ants life) where the grasshoppers decide they don't have much to live for. You only need to look at certain countries in South America- where if you have money you need to live in a compound with armed guards, to see where ignoring the grasshoppers gets you. When you take care of the grasshoppers you are making sure you live in a society where most people have enough of their needs met that they will not turn to violence. A lot of people overlook and discount that fact. To me it's a lot like people who ignore taking care of the environment- I mean IF you had somewhere else to live I guess ruining the environment might make some sense, but if you actually have to live in the environment, what's the upside to having a bunch of money and living somewhere uninhabitable? Same goes for the peoplesphere.
