cancer is only one of the bad effects of poor environmental hygiene/custody. what most people don't know is that good healthy foods contain far more carcinogens than contaminated environments (such as "poisoned groundwater"). The exception is the 3rd world and a lot of places in the former soviet union.
understand that the presence of contamination, even really bad contamination, does not equate to a demand for service (to clean it up or otherwise evaluate it). the only demand comes in when a governmental agency compells a private party to investigate or cleanup. this is why the cutbacks in agency budgets are so importnat. i don't know about canada (are U canadian ?), but in the states the agency budgets have been waning for 5 years or more.
the only other compelling factor which can require a party to need to investigate or cleanup is business merger, takeover, substantial loan, or property transfer. and the entities which do environmental work for these reasons tend to do it "faster and smarter" (ie, for less $$) than the contractors/consultants all used to do it. Hence, even the same amount of work to be done is being done more efficiently (ie, for lower dollars). Tough to do when your major cost is your professional labor, and they are hoping to get 3 % raises!
I, obviously, am not really happy any more in the field. why ? because the people who'd like to clean up the environment can't afford to; the places that really need cleaning up there is no money for (they are far away); and the clients we have come to us out of necessity rather than choice (ie, the use our industry begrudingly).
best of luck in your investing. if I hear of something good i will let you know. |
