Bullpucky, Kumar. That's the "state" making a good little slave out of you. Who is a better judge of my driving, me, or some bureaucrat at the state capital? It's just another government racket. I have to get a government license to get married. Does that make marriage a "privilege, not a right" given to me by benevolent bureaucrats? All state licensing is a combination of money raising and control of the individual by the state.

I'm with Kumar on this.

The state has an interest, and I'd say it's a compelling interest, in insuring that people who take charge of 2,000 or more pounds of steel have demonstrated a certain level of competence in maneuvering through traffic.

Marriage is not an apt comparison.

Think more in terms of professional licensing. You wouldn't, for example, want the surgeon who takes out your gall bladder to be the sole judge of his own capabilities as a surgeon. Nor do we want 85 year old Alzheimer's patients driving a Ford Excursion.
