Re: I'm thinking of buying Dell's 42 inch HDTV Plasma TV. Does anyone have information on the quality of it's video and sound performance? Any info on its reliability? I read that there are problems with the sound (buzz in the audio), poor quality with the black images, and bad pixals.

I've been waiting for the 1080P sets to come out, then drop a bit in price, and they're now here. You should probably at least take a look at them - I plan to. Make sure that a 1080P source is available. The HD-DVD disks that should start becoming available next year will be 1080P. I've seen tweeters advertising a good selection of 1920x1080 machines in a number of sized from several makers (and tweeter's service is also supposed to be good). I'd also take a long hard look at DLP in general before going plasma.

Plasma's problems with burn in are supposed to have been greatly reduced by new technology that keeps twitching the image around so that the same pixels aren't always being lit. Screen life in general has also been extended over earlier models, but it can still be an issue depending on how many hours per day the TV's expected to be on. Plasma screens also have issues of graininess due to the borders around the cells.

That said, if you still prefer plasma, perhaps because your room requires that it be hung on a wall, the reviews I've seen of the Dell were that it was one of the better units.
