Some shun XBox and go with Sony because Microsoft is the huge monopolist. Others shun Sony and go with Microsoft because Sony killed off almost all of the rest of the console market. Groo has a good article on The Inq. theinquirer.net He thinks the console market is about to implode. I can't say he is wrong, the new consoles are fiendishly tough to program effectively, and that is only going to drive costs up. And that makes things even more precarious for the inevitable flops.
