Michael, people aren't dust and the Geneva convention prohibits summary execution, torture etc of prisoners. Naughty people are the ones who want to hide what they are doing. Good people don't need to sweep dust under the rug.

Saddam should be careful though. He's demanding to be handed over to Iraqis as far as I could tell. He should be grateful to be held by Americans, who, despite water-boarding and all that, are by and large likely to be more considerate of him than are Iraqis.

I don't think "good Iraqis" need be embarrassed. Nor do "man on the street" Iraqis, who I suppose you mean are different from "good Iraqis".

It seems a reasonable guess that Saddam's supporters are murdering anyone associated with his trial; and other people too.

A sensible approach might be to simply hold him as a prisoner of war until the war is finished. Which it isn't.
