BP hopeful of deal soon with Alaska on gas pipeline: Browne

Washington (Platts)--29Nov2005

BP's chief executive John Browne Tuesday said he was "very hopeful" that
an agreement can be reached with the state of Alaska on building a natural gas
pipeline from the North Slope to the Lower 48.

"I believe negotiations and discussions are going very well," Browne said
following a speech on energy security to the Washington-based think tank The
Brookings Institution. "I believe and hope that negotiations will be concluded
very soon," perhaps after the "turn of the year."

Browne described the negotiations over basic fiscal terms as "very
complicated" because of the proposed pipeline's $20- to $30-bil price tag and
the long lag time between construction and building and ultimate return to
investors.

ConocoPhillips has already reached an agreement with Alaska, but BP and
ExxonMobil are still negotiating with the state to change fiscal terms on oil
and gas production as an incentive to get the project moving.
