Oh its true that they don't mean a lot. Few people will read them (75 bookmarks on this thread and than you deduct for ignores or people skipping messages), and at least half of those few probably will disagree or won't care.

Still the issue we are discussing (how accurate charges are) is an important one even if the actual discussion has almost zero impact on the national level. Its important even in the practical sense that it will have an impact. Other people will form judgements about how accurate and relevant the charges are and those judgements will sway votes at the margin.

If someone is the most extreme form of flip-flopper than the charges will probably work better than if they are a borderline case. If on the other hand the person charged is a model of consistancy the charges will probably backfire.
