There is one serious repercussion to withdrawing from Iraq before the country is stable: No one will ever take the US military seriously again. We will be seen as toothless cowards by every third world dictator in the world. Between Iraq and Vietnam we will have shown them that we talk tough but when things actually do get tough Americans cut and run. All a country has to do is disperse it's troops as we are building up and then attack our troops terrorist style.

Leaving may be the smartest thing to do with Iraq but it is by far the dumbest thing this country can do if we want our military threats to be taken seriously in the future. As for the 2000 plus military deaths being touted by the press, that's chicken feed even if it was for one year (it's for the entire occupation). It really is. Look at how many people get killed by drunk drivers each year, how many people are murdered in Washington DC each year, or how many people die from almost any cause. While the press doesn't talk about any of that, they preach endlessly about one of the most important issues of our time.

We need to get out of Iraq but leaving before the Iraqi government is stable is so foolish that I am surprised anyone is even discussing it.
