What Castro does or doesn't do has no bearing on how my country is seen thruout the world.
I see... you're more into "form over substance".. Image, instead of principle..
How Hollywood of you...
So... do you think our founding fathers wrote our constitution based upon how they would be publicly perceived, or based upon heart-felt values they believed in, and were willing to risk their lives fighting for?
The onliest differences between him and dictators we support are that he ain't our SOB, he is 90 miles from Fla,
Actually, I believe the difference is that we are generally supporting the "lesser of two evils" with the dictators we've tolerated, and have constantly urged them to moderate and reform their political and economic systems to match democratic values. (but not always successfully).
Whereas, with Castro, he has people like you constantly playing "apologist" for the brutal repression and subjugation of an entire population, while lamblasting those who only recommend that he permit REAL political opposition to hold him politically accountable to the will of the people..
And isn't that kind of the bottom line for Castro? Instead of a government "of the people, for the people, and by the people", his unaccountable regime is one "of for Castro, for Castro, and by Castro"..
Yeah.. sure literacy rates are decent, and there's good medical care.. Those are great benefits that every evolving society should possess. But while they may be free from a financial end, they only come at a great cost to human freedom and dignity, as well as fear of imprisonment should one be foolish (brave) enough to voice any criticism or un-sanctioned opposition.
Castro has created a "papa knows best" society and a brainwashed not only many Cubans, but people like yourself, into buying into his cult of personality.
It's so EASY for people like Castro and Chavez to "play the victim" and lay the blame for their economic failures upon external forces, especially when foolish people like yourself fail to see the forest for the trees, and enable his continue reign of tyranny.
The only thing saving Chavez is the windfall he's receiving from oil revenues that continue to prop up his regime.
