Good points Solon - Dale Baker really is a pissant.
"It would seem that a two party system encourages and enables extreme polarization. If there were truly a moderate centrist equivalency, then a centrist party could be competitive. That not being the case, I think it is fair to assume that the polls do not reflect any lessening of extremism--but rather a disenchantment with the leader and a suspicion from both extremities of unreliable guidance.
It doesn't help his popularity that 2000 deaths impact on the personal feelings of many many more thousands of people.
But if people want change they need to engage in sound argument and expression of opinion. Values are changed by argument. And if all we do is read or proselytize the arguments of others, then we have not internalized a position of our own--and our values are as water taking the path of least resistance.
The very thing that gives extremists power is the willingness of ordinary people to be led and controlled by the opinions of others. The media fuels itself by publishing extremist views. Using such articles as arguments for social change simply puts social change in the hands of those brave enough to write--and to express and to argue an opinion.
I just don't know how people are going to develop independent thought and judgment if they refuse to acknowledge their intelligence and their right to assess, judge, argue, and influence opinion?
At least the extremists have PASSION? If "moderates" wish to influence society and government they will need to develop some passion--maybe learn to articulate and ARGUE their values?
So what is the view from the center? News reports and links to news reports? Is the center a good place to be? Why? What does the "view from the center" value? Why? If there is truly a significant centrist following, then where is the political expression??
I applaud your attempt to strike a moderate pose. But convincing people of the advantage of particular values requires stating the values and arguing for them. Posting articles is simply a love-in. Nothing wrong with that. But if you want social change...well...WHAT DO YOU VALUE AND WHY??
Some issues for the "Centrist" party to commit on: abortion, health care, education, day care, welfare, military spending, research, taxes, immigration, etc. I would surely love to know your position on these issues.
Again: WHAT IS THE "VIEW FROM THE CENTER"?? Why should people choose the CENTER over the Left or the Right??"
