Good stuff. We on the other side of the abortion issue would disagree with the abortion argument as sinking all left wing principles - that is a view from the right wing side. It does seem that those on the right have a much stronger view of the abortion demarcation line than those on the left, in general.

Since certain issues cannot be 'settled' legally (or at least, Constitutionally), there must be a broader definition which includes both sides (or, in some cases, the many sides). I guess 'live and let live' is as good of a sound bite label as any, but it of course more complex than that. All legal issues are a compromise of some sort; I don't see how abortion, sexual orientation, marriage, and lifestyle are any different than taxes, property laws, or social programs.

One conservative battle cry that I believe is destructive to such debates is the attack on supposed 'judicial activism'. Reducing the power of the judicial branch cannot result in anything good, and may result in a shifting of the power structure to the legislative branch (which has recently shown just how competent and moral they are...) or, worse yet, the executive branch.
