Rhapsody DR closing in on release....
via MacOS Rumors
>As the Rhapsody Developer Release 1.0 nears the date of its expected release, Rumors has received more news on the latest pre-release builds being used by developers in several locations:
Yes, NSHosting [the ability to access your computer's desktop and your own custom interface from anywhere] works from Rhapsody to (OpenStep for Intel) 4.2 -- it's pretty weird, because it actually puts the Mac title bar at the top of the NeXT screen (overwriting the top of the dock). Also, the Apple menu actually contains all the running apps when NSHosted to 4.2, which surprised us since we didn't think it would have this information.
The Blue Box boots really fast under Rhapsody -- notably faster than most Macs I've seen boot. It looks just like a booting Mac, too, since it is, in fact, a booting Mac. The version I saw had QuickTime VR and several other QuickTime extensions load up at boot.
....which is consistent with what we've heard from several other developers. Despite rumors that DR's compilers are sacrificing speed for stability and the Developer Release may be as much as 30% slower than later version of Rhapsody will be, it is still reportedly a significant amount faster (on the same processor) than the Mac OS doing everyday tasks such as opening applications, editing graphics, and rendering.
Barring any surprises, the Rhapsody Developer Release should ship around the 21st.< |
