Is there a term for taking an argument to an extreme to prove the ends justifies the means?
It has always struck me as fatuous when people immediately move to that type of reasoning.

We live our lives on principles that define who or what we are, a construct of ethics to which we attempt to adhere. Can we ever be tempted to behave otherwise? Sure. And we do. But our ideal, the image of ourselves we hold up to guide us, is what governs our choices and provides the strength and guidance to resist those temptations.

If you begin with an acceptance that there are situations that make violation of the ideal acceptable, you are weakening the power of that image. It is far too easy to turn temptations into legitimate alternatives.

My baby is starving.
My husband beats me.
My parents are too strict.
Everyone else does it.
