As long as we admit that there IS a crime and don't use those mitigating circumstances to give us some kind of permission to abandon our ideals pre facto, which is what I think a lot of these arguments for torture do.

Maybe that is what bothers me-- the idea of deciding beforehand that there are exceptions - how easy then to fit what you want into that category. It's like premeditation and we should be really careful when we start with that kind of debate.

Of course, I feel we did exactly that before we went into Iraq, finding all the justifications we could and ignoring some (to me) important ideals-- like NOT invading another country on our own.
