Washington Post meta-journalist Howard Kurtz:

Newspapers provide the overwhelming amount of news in this country. Washington news, investigative news, state news, local news, business news, sports news, science news, you name it. Everyone else, from Web sites to TV to magazines, poaches off newspapers. ...But the savviest bloggers understand that they are free riders on a news train powered by daily papers.

I guess Kurtz has never heard of the Associated Press -- which, last time I checked, not only was not a newspaper but actually provided most of the column-inches for many American newspapers, especially in smaller suburban markets. Who's free-riding off whom here?

In any case, most bloggers simply don't consider themselves "journalists," but rather "commentators." And we seem to understand the difference much better than some newspaper columnists, including Kurtz.

Journalist is as journalist does. Commentator is as commentator is does. And MSM apologist is as MSM apologist does.
