This Register author is extremely confused. The most successfull companies in history gave products away and collected revenue from other sources. AT&T was one of the largest monopolies and they collected revenue from providing a service and virtually provided you the phone for free. IBM gave away the software to sell the hardware they dominated IT for a very long time. Gillete has made a very nice business for themselves by virtually giving away the shaver to get the repeat razor business. Most cell companies virtually give away the cell phone and as an industry collect huge revenues by providing a service. Both the water and electric industry provide the infrastructure to provide a service.

In SUNW's case I think they can monetize service business by providing support services. Down the road when the internet becomes a true utility they can monetize the internet by being a pure service provider to business like AT&T was to the phone industry.
