It made me wonder how much greater Rome might have become if Caesar had not been assassinated.

It was the first major Western civilization. I think it would have degenerated in any case. One of the things that did them in was lead water pipes. Lead poisoning killed off the upper class who had piped water.

Another thing that held them back was no "horse collar." The invention of the horse collar allowed the use of horses to pull a plow. That made a major difference in agriculture production.

But the major point was the political structure was too inflexible. They couldn't maintain the empire with a dictatorship.
