LONG BEACH – A 6-year-old girl was in critical condition Friday after she and three family members suffered carbon monoxide poisoning at their home, a hospital official said.

The girl's 15-year-old brother was listed in stable condition at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, said Colleen Reinhart, a hospital spokeswoman. Their parents, Lee Williams and Sherri Powdrill, were treated and released.

The family had been living in the home since August, but had turned their heater on for the first time Thursday night, Reinhart said.

Powdrill woke up early Friday feeling weak and nauseous. She crawled out of bed and found her husband foaming at the mouth and the children unresponsive, Reinhart said.

All four family members were treated in a hyperbaric chamber, which replaces carbon monoxide with pure oxygen, Reinhart said.

Investigators were looking into whether a leaky heater valve was to blame for the gas leak.
