A while back the University of California was experimenting with a spray for strawberries, to prevent them from freezing. This involved a genetically altered bacteria as the agent to prevent damage. And naturally, the testing was stopped due to opposition by the neo-Luddite crowd who promote fear of any and all genetic engineering. I don't know if the testing was resumed; this technique may well be in use by now.
