Sunday school would become a lesson in the dangers of carbon monoxide. It was a frightening lesson learned when a child did not feel well at Pilgrim Congregational Church in New Haven.

"Initially, we had a person come out of the church go across the street to the firehouse and had a child that was reportedly in seizure," says Battalion Chief Ralph Black, New Haven Fire Department.

Fire crews quickly ran across the street with a carbon monoxide meter.

"Found that we had extremely high levels of CO in the building, upwards of 800 parts per million," says Black.

They discovered other people had symptoms of CO poisoning.

"Some of the signs of CO that were noticed on some of the children were cherry red cheeks, feeling nausea, just not feeling good."

The building was quickly evacuated as more companies were called in, including a technician from the Southern Connecticut Gas Company. The cause of the leak was quickly discovered.

"We found out that the cause of this CO emergency is the heating unit, the furnace in the basement."
