Actually, it's sad to hear. Because there's no reason that those Marines, who all are supposed to train to be "infantrymen first" should be taking the kind of casualties that they are.

I recall the situation with the Snipers who were slain a couple of months ago. As I've heard the story, they failed to vary their routine, instead returning to the same "hide site" over and over again, and leaving their vehicle to be seen...

Then they fell asleep and were slain point-blank. It was an incredible and tragic waste of life, and I also considered it a supervisory leadership failure. You don't send men out under such conditions without having overwatch on their position so they can be rescued should find themselves involved in a "furball". Also, regular radio checks would have dictated that someone had to remain awake..

But overall, in past months, we've seen areas that Marine commanders declared "clean" turn up a bundle of bad guys (Ramadi/Fallujah/Amiriyah area).

Again.. some would opine that the fault lies in their leadership's seeming past unwillingness to interact with Army forces in their battlespace.

While I might concur with that from my distant observation, it is, however, the opinion of others with more experience and insight into the issue.
