I know my own faith is so shaken that I can't even call it faith anymore.

The thing that helps me is knowing that we always seem to muddle through somehow things turn out OK. Not necessarily well, but OK. Lots of lost opportunity, for sure, but never a disaster. I do think we're pretty close to disaster proof.

The other thing that helps me is not being so determined that there's only one right way to do things. People like that always see crises. I used to be like that. I've mellowed a lot and it helps a lot.

The first student asked him about separation of powers, that the judiciary was a check on the executive and the legislative functions, but what was the check on the judiciary?

I'm impressed with their students. Maybe we should be modeling the Polish public schools. :/

As for checks on the judiciary, that doesn't concern me as much as it concerns you. If one of the three has to be top dog, I'd pick the judiciary. The judiciary has an important role in protecting us from the tyranny of the majority. It's the only entity that can do that. As for the tyranny of the judiciary, if we really care we can further legislate whatever they decided that is not to our liking and we can even amend the Constitution. They can't trump that.

I don't think what we have with the judiciary is perfect but I can't imagine what would be better.
