Not all that weird that furnaces should have problems at the beginning of winter. They've been sitting idle all year, succumbing to the forces of entropy. We knew ours had problems because we have an annual service contract, which is essential for an oil furnace. Gas furnaces and electric furnaces probably don't need them so much but can't hurt to have someone regularly adjusting things and oiling things and so forth. The time to have them looked at is in the summer. Well, spring, summer, or early fall. Not wait until you need to use it.
