On a related issue, we also need to reform how districts are drawn. Politicians don't even pretend to do it fairly any more. A good example I am all to familiar with, the latest redistricting that was done in Texas. You know, the one the lawyers at the Justice Department said was illegal. Anyway, here is the map

Just click on the button for the 109th Congress. One thing that becomes immediately clear is that the politicians were fond of linear structures, nothing like a consolidated area. Look at the 15th and the 25th. Both start at the border and wind their way almost to East Texas. Not a lot in common between those areas except for a tendency to vote Republican. Or the 10th, forming a bridge between Austin and Houston. Or the butterfly shape of the 22nd.

To hell with it. It is painfully obvious that the politicians can't be trusted with this job. Again, it isn't like this is a new problem, the term "gerrymandering" dates back to 1812.

The problem with gerrymandering is that, when they aren't being used to marginalize the opposition party or minority groups, it is often used to entrench incumbents. It has gotten so refined that only a small percentage of the seats in Congress is ever really in play in a given election. So politicians don't feel as much pressure to serve their constituency.
